Tributes and Messages of Condolence Received by Radio London

Sanjeev Bhaskar (The actor and writer began his broadcasting career at Radio West Mid)
Dear Mary

Very sad news indeed. I have always retained such fond memories of volunteering at Radio West Mid and of Alan’s generosity towards me and giving me the opportunity to present a show. His counsel was always wise and despatched with great humour.

I’d always harboured a desire to pop back in and present a show and if it ever happens it will be bittersweet with Alan’s absence.

Please pass on my deep condolences to all at the station and to Alan’s friends and family.

A appreciate your letting me know. Best, Sanjeev
Hans Knot (Author, compiler of the International Radio Newsletter and co-organiser of the Amsterdam Radio Days)
Chris and Mary, indeed very sad news. Also far too early. My condolences and try to stay strong and healthy as possible during this very bad period.
Warm greetings, Hans

This is very sad news. A terrible loss. Alan will be remembered as particularly kind and a pleasant conversationalist.

Devastating news – heartbreaking. I am so sorry. It's so hard when you've known someone for over 50 years.
I feel for your grief. Sending love to you both.

Geoff Pearson (Radio London staff)

So sorry to hear of Alan Hardy’s passing. I have to admit to not knowing Alan until Denise and I met him at Offshore 50. He came across as a very pleasant man who seemed to embody the life a real radio man.
We will be thinking of you both as he was a particular friend of yours.

Ben and Inge Meijering (Offshore 50 Team)

We are shocked to read that Alan has passed away. Our deepest condolences to both of you at this time.

It was only a couple of weeks ago when I was watching a video from the Radio London 2000 RSL, where Alan was presenting. (Photo at the top of this page) It's unbelievable that he is not with us anymore.

We wish both of you lots of strength during this difficult time.

John Sales (Offshore 50 Team)
I was very sorry to learn of the sad passing of Alan Hardy.  I of course did know that he'd been ill for some time and he'd been providing fairly regular updates on his condition until around a couple of months ago.  But I certainly didn't expect this and am still in a state of shock from receiving the news.

Alan was a very much valued core member of our small Radio Group that meets-up, from time to time, usually somewhere in London.  He is, very sadly, the latest member of the group to have departed.  Alan was, I know, very involved in the organisation of both "Offshore 35" in 2002 (Doggett's) and "Offshore 50" in 2017.  He was an excellent presenter and his knowledge of music, even the obscure stuff, was absolutely amazing as was his knowledge of the 1960s Offshore Radio stations!

His work with both Radio West Mid and his local church clearly demonstrated his dedication to helping and being there for others.

It's a great pity that, under the present rules in place due to the Coronavirus Pandemic that we'll be unable to attend Alan's funeral.  However, I will certainly be thinking of him at 3.00pm on Friday 3rd and recalling the many interesting meetings I had, over the years, with a good and trusted friend.

RIP Alan Hardy – You have left us much too soon!
Alan Field (Offshore 50 Team)

I'm still reeling from the news. I was wondering about Alan particularly in the present emergency, but this has come like a bolt from the blue.

Alan was one of life's givers, always doing so much for other people, truly dedicated. I'm so sad to think of him gone. And way, way too soon.

Mary, you've produced a wonderful, warm and loving tribute to a dear dear friend. You've done Alan proud with your words and photos and shared memories. A testament to a life spent in radio and music and dedicated to the service of others. Alan, you'll always be in our hearts.

Steve Garlick (former Radio West Mid presenter)

So sorry to have heard of Alan's passing. He made such a difference to the many people he met throughout his life and dedicated himself to helping others. In the case of Radio West Mid, it was patients needing cheering up with a friendly chat on the ward and a favourite record played later by Alan on his Needle Talk request show. His tireless service to the community and his church never faltered. The latter he hardly mentioned. His faith was strong but private. No song and dance.

As the years pass, the memories Alan's family and close friends have of him will never dim. A man much admired and loved by many who crossed paths with him. My condolences to his family and to you, Chris and Mary, on the loss of such a close and much loved friend.
