The Red Sands Radio Station Daily Opening Theme by the French Band ‘Air’ entitled ‘La Femme D’Argent’ (The Silver Woman/The Money Girl)

This comes from their album ‘Moon Safari’ recorded in Paris between April – June 1997

I was given an advanced copy by Fiona at Virgin when running Medway FM, used as a bed to promote the daily ‘Medway FM Café Live Lunch’ ahead of it becoming popular with a wider audience

Red Sands Radio Closedown Daily Theme Tune is by ‘Franck Pourcel’ entitled ‘On a Clear Day You Can See Forever’. The track from the Musical of the same name was composed in 1929

The late French Orchestral leader ‘Franck Pourcel’ recorded the track originally in 1965 with vocals for the ‘Overture’ LP

Re-recorded in 1970 ‘On a Clear Day You Can See Forever’ can be found on the ‘This is Pourcel’ vinyl album: Columbia STWO 7

We played the track in tribute to the original Radio 390 theme, a KPM library piece by the ‘Telecast Orchestra’ called ‘Sentimental’, sounding very similar, often confused with ‘On a Clear Day’

There’s no evidence, although some believe Frank Chacksfield recorded the track

‘Robert Goulet’ did though record 'On a Clear Day You Can See Forever’ for his ‘On Broadway‘ album, Columbia CL 2418 (1965) which Offshore Radio Essex used as a ‘Tender Call’ It also was released as a 7" single Columbia 4-43394

It appeared again in France on a compilation Music Cassette called ‘Unforgettable Melodies’ featuring the orchestras of Franck Pourcel, Ron Goodwin, Geoff Love, Manuel and His Music of the Mountains (1977)

‘Unforgettable Memories’ on CD was released in UK on the EMI Music for Pleasure Label: CD-DL- 1120 (1991) Readers Digest included it on ‘Melodies Moods & Memories’, an 8 vinyl LP set: GMMM-A-215 (1992)

'On a Clear Day You Can See Forever’ can also be found on the double sampler CD ‘This is Pourcel/Plays The Cole Porter Story’: Studio 2 Stereo CDP498147 (1999)

 

Finally, The Phil Green Orchestra recorded a version of 'On a Clear Day You Can See Forever’ on 'The Romantic Sounds of Yesterday' album, State Records, ETMP13 (1979)

Carefully selected 'Filler' tracks were designed to re-enforce station imaging and branding

Starting with a haunting voice repeating the station name three times, edited, remixed to various lengths, overlaid with ‘live’ atmospheric recordings of the resident Red Sands Fort Seagulls, the North Redsands Buoy with the sound of waves lapping around the Forts legs, were primarily produced to create ‘bumpers’ to top of the hour Commercial Stop Set and News
